Cub Scout Pack 696

Cub Scout Pack 696

Wednesday, December 5, 2012

Hello Pack 696!

This is Robert Bragg, the Wolf Den Leader! Bayou Realtors is putting together its Christmas "Hay Ride" Float for the Rotary Christmas Parade, and is inviting all of Pack 696 to join us on the float.

The parade starts at the True Cross Catholic Church on 517 East in Dickinson, and it ends at the Dickinson City Hall Complex. Note, this is different than last year, where it ended at Amegy Bank.

The float line-up starts at 6:00pm. I suggest Cubs and Akela's arrive by 6:30 pm, and no later than 6:45pm. The parade starts at 7:00pm.

The trailer will hold a big group. However, if we get too full, then the Cub Scouts and other Children will ride the trailer, and the adults will need to walk. We need at least 4 adults (2 each side) walking along side the trailer.

Please bring at least 2 bags of candy per child (and adult) for throwing out candy to the spectators. Warning...make sure you regulate how much candy your kid throws, or it won't last long.

Its a good idea to carpool, and take 2 cars, leaving one at the end of the parade. You might also want to bring some blankets to lay on the hay for comfort. I'm not sure how many people will show up, so we might have to make adjustments.

Click for the Parade Instructions and the Parade Parking Map.

If you have any questions, please call Robert Bragg at 832.534.0625. Please join us...its a lot of fun!

Thanks,
Robert M. Bragg

PACK 696 FISHING AND HIKING

Hi Scout families!

Tomorrow is Family Fish and Fun Day at Challenger Park! The event begins around 10 am. Let's meet at the pond near the entrance to the park. We'll fish for awhile, then take a hike to the Earth Sculpture. Please bring lunch for your family. There is no cost for this. My understanding is that kids don't need a fishing license, but adults do if they want to fish. (Licenses are available at Wal-Mart, Academy, and other stores, or you may just want to watch your kiddo fish instead.)

This is a very laid-back event. Here is some fishing advice from Jason, the Bear Den Leader:

Come prepared to fish more for perch, catfish, and other small fish rather than bass, etc. I would recommend a bobber (cork) and a small hook and live worms. Other catfish type baits may work as well. An older gentleman who was there last Sunday also said he had seen kids catch fish on pieces of cut up hot dog.

If you have extra fishing equipment, please bring it if you are willing to loan it to others in our pack who don't have any. :)

All Scouts can begin earning their fishing belt loop at this event. Parents, if you want info on this, see Joe or me tomorrow and we will have a copy of the requirements--it's very easy to meet these requirements.

See you tomorrow!

NATIVE AMERICAN WEEKEND AT CAMP KARANKAWA

Hi Scout families,

Here is some information on Native American Weekend. This is a special Council-sponosored camping event at Camp Karankawa in Sweeny, TX and includes all Cub scout packs from around the area.
**ALL adults planning to go MUST have completed YPT (Youth Protection) training to attend this campout. Our friends at Pack 207 will hold YPT training Thursday, November 8th at 7pm at First Baptist Church. Childcare will be available for $5 per family and the training is FREE! Please let Christina Brummer with Pack 207 know if you will be attending this training. Her email is cubscoutspack207@yahoo.com
Please go to http://www.bacbsa.org/event/1237541 to register for this camping trip. We will not register for this trip as a pack.
There will also be a range master training available Friday night for $5 that you can sign up for when you register. (See below for details on this.)
Space is limited and registration ends Oct 31st.

If you are new to Scouting and need clarification on anything below, please email me--the information below is from Council and can be hard to understand if you've never been to a district-sponsored campout before. :)

Jennifer

PS--Joe (our Pack Committee Chair, Treasurer, Outings Coordinator and my dear husband) is firming up reservations for the Pack 696 fall campout as we speak. I hope to have details for you guys Tuesday. We are looking at the weekend of Nov 30-Dec 2.

Details:
Bay Area Council
presents
Native American Weekend 2012
Major Program Areas:
  • Handicrafts
  • Archery, BB Guns, Wrist Rockets
  • Indian Lore Area with Native Drumming/Dancing, Games, and Cooking demonstrations.
  • Waterfront: Canoes/Rowboats
  • Tepees, Wickiups, and other exciting Native American displays.
The gates will open at 3:00 PM on Friday, Nov. 9th. Gates will be locked at 10:00 P.M.
The gates will re-open again for check-in at 7:30 AM on Saturday, Nov. 10th.
Check-in will be located at Cub World as you enter camp. All cars will be labeled with campsite and number of participants, then sent on to Parking crews.
Event rotation for the activities on Saturday will be assigned at check-in according to which campsite you are staying in.
Unloading near bathrooms will be in 15 min. intervals only (unload, park, then return to move gear to campsite). Parking attendants will be present to assist and keep a Trustworthy eye on your gear while you park. There will be NO parking on camp roadways.
Registration has been limited to 1500 participants. Prices will be $12 per child (all Scouts siblings under age 18 and over the age of 5), and $8 per adult.
Please be aware that NO meals will be provided. (Some Native American cooking demonstrations will be held on Saturday but will only provide small samples).
As with most family camping, meals for the weekend should be planned and prepared as a Pack, Troop, or Family group.
A Boy Scout certified Shooting Director will be present to set up ranges; however, each group participating must provide a BSA Certified Rangemaster for your particular age group if they desire to shoot archery/BB’s. Hour-long blocks at the ranges will be issued at check-in for units who can provide proof of a rangemaster.
The reasons for this decision are as follows:
1) This will alleviate extreme demands on volunteer staff with so many participants at camp.
2) Allows the ranges to be operational immediately so there should be little or no waiting.
There will be a Range Master Class on Friday Night at the Training Lodge from 7 – 10 PM to help the units that could not get to a training class before now. Each unit is required to have at least 2 Range Masters to run the Range for their unit. No Range Master, No Range time. Every Range Master must bring their own whistle to run their range. Each unit will be given a one-hour time slot for each Range use. If you show up at any other time than your time allotted you will be asked to leave until it is your turn. We will have BB Gun Ranges, Archery Ranges and Wrist Rocket Ranges. The Wrist Rocket Range will have staff members and a Range Monitor to help the Range Masters with the rules and operation of the range.

PACK 696 UPDATE!!

Hi again,

Here's the latest info for our pack. At tomorrow's den meetings, we will have a special Red Ribbon Week presentation from a K-9 police officer. Den leaders, please plan about 20 minutes for the presentation.

The camping trip planned for Nov 2-4 will have to be moved because Brazos Bend couldn't accommodate our MASSIVE group of 130+ people that weekend. We're working on rescheduling the trip for a later date. We're so sorry to disappoint you. :(

If you went to Bobcat in the Park and earned your Bobcat Badge, please let your den leader know tomorrow night and he/she will make sure to get your Scout their award at the next pack meeting. Summertime awards will also be handed out then. Scouts are invited to wear Halloween costumes to the Pack meeting on Oct. 30.

A HUGE thank you to Courtney and Katherine, this year's popcorn fundraising chairs. These ladies have worked tirelessly counting money, organizing orders, and setting up Show and Sells for the benefit of our pack and our boys. We are so grateful for your help!

The pack leadership team is overwhelmed with planning for campouts, events, and tracking paperwork and membership forms. If you can offer any assistance in any of these areas, please talk to Joe, our Pack Committee Chair, tomorrow night. A well-run pack functions with 7-9 committee members (aside from Den Leaders), and currently, our pack only has 3. We could really use some help coordinating camping, working on the unit recharter paperwork and planning for Pinewood Derby and the Blue and Gold Banquet.

Thank you for supporting your boys in Scouting!

Jennifer :)

NATIONAL NIGHT OUT ON TUESDAY, OCT. 2, 2012

Pack 696! National Night Out is tonight. Our Cub Scouts are encouraged to get out of their home with their Akela's, and meet their neighbors, or get involved in some other community event.

Be sure to check with your Den Leader to see if you have any specific plans or a Den Meeting. As a Pack, we decided at our Pack Meeting that we would not be holding any Den Meetings today.

Thanks!

WELCOME NEW SCOUT PARENTS TO PACK 696!!

Hi new Scout Parents!!

My name is Jennifer and I'm the PR chair for Cub Scout Pack 696. My son Ian is a third grade Bear Scout. I am a fourth-grade teacher at Calder Road Elementary and am the "go-to-gal" for all types of Scouting information. This email is just to introduce myself and let you know a few things:

A Cub Scout pack consists of 5 dens separated by grade level. If you have a 1st grader, they are a new Tiger Scout. Second graders are Wolf Scouts, third graders are Bear Scouts, and fourth graders are Webelos I Scouts. Our pack has a current enrollment of 46 scouts and is part of the Bay Area Council of Boy Scouts of America. Their website is a wealth of information for new Scouts and parents. Please take a moment to visit their site at www.bacbsa.org when you can. Our pack also has a blog, which we are in the process of updating. I'll have that address for you tomorrow night.

Tomorrow (Tuesday) is our first Pack meeting of the new year. This is a monthly meeting where all five scout dens meet and hand out monthly awards. We will also be welcoming you to the pack. Please come tomorrow night if you can. If you don't have a uniform for your new Scout, don't worry. Just come as you are. Each Tuesday we meet at Dickinson First United Methodist Church, which is the big church on 517 near Wendy's. Please enter the church from the back side.

We are trying to wrap up our recruitment for the year. If you have not paid your Scout's registration fee for this calendar year, the prorated rate is $6.25. If you can, please try to pay tomorrow night. Our council is in the running for top recruitment in the nation, and we would like to help by sending in our outstanding applications this week. You can pay by check or cash. Most of you paid at recruitment night--if you aren't sure if you have paid already, please see one of the pack leaders tomorrow night and we can check for you.

We have several events coming up, and there will be a printed parent update available for you tomorrow night. Please stop by to see me and get a calendar of events for the upcoming year. I'll be the one with a pen and pile of paper permanently attached to my hand. :)

Our popcorn fundraiser is in full swing and is one way you can help the pack. Throughout the year, we have many events requiring supplies, patches, and fees, and by selling popcorn, you can raise money to cover your pack dues. These dues are around $80 for an entire calendar year--which is CHEAP for all the awards, crafts, skills, fellowship and fun you can stand! Our Popcorn Kernals, Katherine and Courtney, will be available tomorrow night to give you the skinny on this fundraiser. Please see them to get an order form so you can start selling immediately. If you choose, you can opt out of the fundraiser and pay your pack dues out-of-pocket, but most scouts choose to sell popcorn to cover this expense. It's fun and very easy.

Scouting is a wonderful program for your boy and we are delighted to have you joining our pack. Hope to see you tomorrow! Please feel free to email me back with any questions.

PACK 696 IS BACK INTO THE SWING OF THINGS

Hello New and Returning Cub Scouts!!

Pack 696 is back into full swing for the 2012-2013 Cub Scout Season! We meet every Tuesday's at the First United Church in Dickinson from 6:30 pm to 7:30 pm, with the last Tuesday of the month as our Pack Meeting, where we all gather to celebrate the awards that our Cubs have earned!

Popcorn sales have been going strong, with Pack 696 having "Show and Sell" at different locations, such as Kroger's in Dickinson and League City. Our new Popcorn Kernels have done a FANTASTIC JOB of coordinating all the sales, allowing our Cubs an opportunity to earn their dues and donate time to "Help the Pack Grow!"

We have some great things coming this year. If you are new, and need to join our email list, please send an email to Jennifer Donovan at dickinson696@yahoo.com, requesting that she add you to the group. She has been doing a great job at keeping everyone updated.

See you on Tuesdays!

MODEL ROCKET LAUNCH -- DATE CHANGE

Cub Scout Pack 696
Model Rocketry Event Information

The model rocketry event is ON! We have found a location! The date has been changed to SATURDAY, JULY 28

The pack can qualify for the National Summertime Pack Award certificate and streamer by having average attendance of at least half of our members at each of these events. Boys who participate in 3 summertime pack events will receive the National Summertime Pack Award pin.

Saturday, July 28, 5 p.m.
Launch at McAdams Junior High School;
Picnic follows at Paul Hopkins Park

This is a noncompetitive event for all family members to learn about model rocketry. Anyone is invited to purchase and decorate a rocket kit—siblings and parents, too! We will also have a special visitor from NASA to join in the fun.

There are several awards that Scouts can earn, with den leaders’ ok, while participating. One is the Cub Scout Outdoor Activity Award (requirements are rank-specific, see your handbook), and these:

Tigers: Electives 17 (Make a Model), 22 (Picnic Fun), 25 (Snack Time), and 29 (Safety in the Sun)
Wolves: Requirement 8e (Plan, prepare and cook an outdoor meal); Elective 5 (Spare Time Fun); Elective 18a, b, f (Outdoor Adventure)
Bears: Requirement 21a, b, f (Build a Model); Requirement 9f (prepare a dessert); Requirement 12c, d (Family Outdoor Adventures); 18 f, g (Information, Please)
Webelos: Part of scientist requirement 8

How do we participate?

Send an email to Dickinson696@yahoo.com and let us know you are participating. We will register your attendance for your National Summertime Pack Award and Cub Scout Outdoor Activity Award.

Check your Handbook to see what requirements and electives you can complete while working on this project. (See above for a short list.)

It is VERY EASY to construct a rocket from a kit. It took our family about 30 minutes and we got the kit from Hobby Lobby. You can also download a 40% off coupon from their website, and get your kit for around $14. Also buy a Class A or B engine (right next to the kits) and you're in business!! You can also get kits from any other hobby or craft stores, such as Michaels.

Don’t forget that ALL family members can build and launch—not just scouts! Friends are welcome, too!

Follow the directions in your kit or online to complete your rocket. Here are some Web links that will give you ideas...

Good general how-to that illustrates how simple building a rocket can be. Uses a store bought kit.

Another site that discusses what to think about when purchasing a rocket kit.

Bring your completed rocket, along with a picnic dinner, lawn chairs and a blanket for your family to the event site on July 28. We will launch first at McAdams Junior High, then go to Paul Hopkins park for an evening of picnicking and hanging out.

Any questions?
Please speak with event coordinator Joe Donovan at 409-789-8040 or nitemaro4@yahoo.com.

We're excited about this event!! Hope to see you on the 28th!

PARENTS COMMITTEE MEETING
Tuesday, July 17, 6:30 p.m
First United Methodist Church.

Calling all Akela's. Please join us for the Parent's Committee Meeting. At this meeting, we are discussing the popcorn fundraiser, summer and fall events, and deciding on dates for events during the upcoming school year.

As per our Law of the Pack, our "Cub Scouts Help The Pack Go" with their attendance and involvement. Our Akelas that volunteer to help also help the "Pack Go." Without the help of our Parents, Grandparents, and Family Volunteers, our Pack would come to a stop. Please Help us to Keep it Going and Growing.

If you are a den leader, assistant den leader, or are serving in another pack leadership position (or may want to serve in one), please "Do Your Best" to attend this meeting.

If you need childcare, we can help! We will use a room at the church for day care to make it very easy. Please let Jennifer Donovan know no later than July 10 if you need this, and she will make arrangements for you. So far we know of 2 kids needing day care. We can still make arrangements for several more.
Hope to see many of you there!

We will have two sponge bomb/water gun areas...
one for kids ages 1-5, and another for kids ages 6-11.
Please feel free to wear family-appropriate bathing suits and plan to get
wet if you enter these areas!

Rules for Pack 696 Raingutter Regatta:

  • When called to race, hold your boat back with your hand against the end of the gutter until you hear the "Go!"
  • When racing, you will be allowed to "upright" your boat with your hands if your boat gets stuck, but you cannot move your boat forward when doing so.
  • There will be one judge per track, and the judges will give a warning if you move your boat forward. If you get a warning(s), the race goes on. If you lose the race after getting a warning(s), no action is required; however, if you win, the race will be repeated.
  • If one of the boats gets broken during a race, the results stand.
  • (Did you see the "Down and Derby" movie where the super fast car that the dads built lost a wheel in the race?). We will allow a 5 minute break for you to fix your boat as best as you can for the next race. Your parents can help you fix your boat.
  • We will race each race twice, switching raingutters. If there is a tie, we will toss a coin, and the winner of the coin toss will choose track for the tie breaker.
  • A race might be repeated if the judges find a reason that merits it.
  • The Raingutter Regatta is a chance to show our good Cub Scout Sportsmanship! Remember, "Do your Best!"
  • No catamarans are allowed. Boats will be propelled using scout’s breath—no propellers or CO2 cartridges, please.
  • You will be assigned a number when you get there, and you will get stick-on numbers to identify your boat. Final check-in for Scouts will be at 10 a.m.
  • Grudge matches will be held after the Scout bracket is completed.

  • TIGER SCOUTS: New Tiger Scouts can decorate a boat kit and race it at the event. Boat kits and decorating supplies will be there for you. Please come and take this chance to meet your fellow Pack members!

Pack 696 T-shirts will be on sale at the event.

    Parents -
please bring lawn chairs, non-pool water toys (including water guns) and sunblock for you and your kids.
