Model Rocketry Event Information
The model rocketry event is ON! We have found a location! The date has been changed to SATURDAY, JULY 28
The pack can qualify for the National Summertime Pack Award certificate and streamer by having average attendance of at least half of our members at each of these events. Boys who participate in 3 summertime pack events will receive the National Summertime Pack Award pin.
Saturday, July 28, 5 p.m.
Launch at McAdams Junior High School;
Picnic follows at Paul Hopkins Park
This is a noncompetitive event for all family members to learn about model rocketry. Anyone is invited to purchase and decorate a rocket kit—siblings and parents, too! We will also have a special visitor from NASA to join in the fun.
There are several awards that Scouts can earn, with den leaders’ ok, while participating. One is the Cub Scout Outdoor Activity Award (requirements are rank-specific, see your handbook), and these:
Tigers: Electives 17 (Make a Model), 22 (Picnic Fun), 25 (Snack Time), and 29 (Safety in the Sun)
Wolves: Requirement 8e (Plan, prepare and cook an outdoor meal); Elective 5 (Spare Time Fun); Elective 18a, b, f (Outdoor Adventure)
Bears: Requirement 21a, b, f (Build a Model); Requirement 9f (prepare a dessert); Requirement 12c, d (Family Outdoor Adventures); 18 f, g (Information, Please)
Webelos: Part of scientist requirement 8
How do we participate?

Check your Handbook to see what requirements and electives you can complete while working on this project. (See above for a short list.)
It is VERY EASY to construct a rocket from a kit. It took our family about 30 minutes and we got the kit from Hobby Lobby. You can also download a 40% off coupon from their website, and get your kit for around $14. Also buy a Class A or B engine (right next to the kits) and you're in business!! You can also get kits from any other hobby or craft stores, such as Michaels.
Don’t forget that ALL family members can build and launch—not just scouts! Friends are welcome, too!

Bring your completed rocket, along with a picnic dinner, lawn chairs and a blanket for your family to the event site on July 28. We will launch first at McAdams Junior High, then go to Paul Hopkins park for an evening of picnicking and hanging out.
